The importance of peer support for trainee & beginning teachers

A research project conducted by Mind With Heart’s volunteer research team has underscored the importance of mutual support and empathetic communication in emotionally supporting beginning and trainee teachers.

It was made clear that the attitude behind efforts to communicate is important. Individuals want “honest conversations about what people are struggling with”, an “open and nurturing” mindset, and an “accepting” attitude.

Therefore, measures to build connection should be of high quality, as well as more frequent. Based upon what trainee and beginning teachers reported, quality communication:

  • builds trust in each other’s capabilities

  • creates empathy with the experiences of others

  • encourages viewing one another as of value
